You've been practicing since mid-summer and your first time out on the floor wasn't what it should have been? Why can't your team pull it together? Take some time to look within the team, at yourself. You must understand that both personal and team goals are best accomplished with mutual support. Time is wasted struggling over your "spot" or attempting personal gain at the expense of others. You need to feel a sense of ownership for your position. You need to feel a sense of ownership for your organization because they are committed to the goals established. You can pull yourselves together and contribute to the organization's success by applying your talent and acknowledging the team objectives. |

Do you suspect an eating disorder with a team mate? It can be a challenge for you to tell the difference between normal self-image concerns, and warning signs that an eating disorder is developing. While kids and teens - girls in particular - are going to be self-conscious, compare themselves to others, and have unaddressed concerns, problems and worries. But those concerns don't necessarily mean that they have eating disorders. In kids with eating disorders, there are glaring abnormal behaviors and physical signs. A teammate with anorexia or bulimia is dangerous for all of you. They can experience dehydration as well as other medical complications. In advanced stages, it can affect the brain and cause symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, agitation, confusion, inability to concentrate, and loss of memory. A coach contacted us about the worries she had because one of her cheerleaders was a cutter. No not someone skipping school. Someone who deliberately inflicts injury to their own body without a suicidal intent. Self-injury usually indicates that along the way that person didn't learn good ways of coping with overwhelming feelings or stress. They’re not sick or insane; they just never learned positive ways to deal with feelings and emotions for various reasons. Positive coping skills can be learned at any point in life. People who self-injure can learn to use new and healthier coping mechanisms. This process may take years to develop with the help of a skilled therapist familiar with this condition. cutting-self injury from the teen's perspective self-injury: types, causes & treatments |

Consider this: 1. Never receive counsel from unproductive people. 2. Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution, because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how. 3. Don't follow anyone who's not going anywhere. With some people you spend an evening: with others you invest it. 4. Be careful where you stop to inquire for directions along the road of life. 5. Wise is the person who fortifies his life with the right friendships. If you run with wolves, you will learn how to howl. But, if you associate with eagles, you will learn how to soar to great heights. "A mirror reflects a man's face, but what he is really like is shown by the kind of friends he chooses." The simple but true fact of life is that you become like those with whom you closely associate - for the good and the bad. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people. As you grow, your associates will change. Some of your friends will not want you to go on. They will want you to stay where they are. |

If you've been cutting and you want to stop, here are some approaches that might help you. From Teen's Health |
1. Exercises should be performed in a standing position: most of your trunk exercises should be performed standing up, since this is the position of most athletic movements. While you're standing the exercises involve all the trunk-and hip-stabiliser muscles and not just the abdominals or low back in isolation. 4. Trunk exercise programmes must be progressive: you’ll learn how to start with simple movements and progress to multi-plane movements when the basics are secure. You’ll start with low-intensity exercises and add resistance to the movements once the technique is mastered and strength is improved. Then you’ll progress your positions: from lying to sitting, to kneeling to standing, to standing on one leg, to standing on one leg on an unstable base. From slow and static exercises, you’ll progress to power exercises. To achieve these goals, we explain how to separate trunk exercises into various categories, and scale each exercise for difficulty within each category. By selecting exercises from each category you will train each kind of movement the trunk performs. You’ll start with the easier exercises in each category and progress safely and effectively. Sarah’s mom agreed to let her 16-year-old go to a party if she promised to be home by midnight. But as the Cinderella hour approached, Sarah did a quick risk/reward calculation. She knew her mom would be angry and probably ground her, but she was having so much fun she decided it was worth it. |

Who's Cheering For Who? You’ve found yourself cheering for Girl’s basketball games because you had to. This has been commonplace in Ohio schools and colleges for a couple of years now. Originally, budgets and transportation to away games was cut and you had to cheer somewhere for your Pay to Play dollars. Another issue is the Title IX Amendment - schools could be violating Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in public education programs and activities. The problem? Cheerleaders weren't spending equal time at the girls' and boys' basketball games. As a result, those schools have to even out the cheers. Dozens of schools have chosen to stop sending cheerleaders to away games, as part of an effort to squeeze all the home girls’ games into the cheerleading schedule. Comments from the boys and their parents – "something is missing". It’s just not the same camaraderie or spirit without the cheer team accompanying them to a rival court. The girl’s view: If the girl’s basketball team doesn’t know you’re coming, their coach isn’t accustom to cheering, the parents didn’t know you were coming – how do you expect them to react? In some cases tensions have run so high and the atmosphere so bad, the cheerleaders left the game. Some of our collegiate cheerleaders are telling us they now like cheering for the girl’s basketball games better than the boy’s games. The basketball team says it brings more excitement to their game. It brings more attendance to their games. The cheerleaders say they feel welcome and appreciated. A good time and great bonding is in the air every game and throughout the week on campus and off. |
